28 UNITED KINGDOM Lawyer Monthly Legal Awards 2022 One example of this is the increasing use of stolen data to conduct fishing expeditions for international tax assistance. These actions are conducted with impunity, as current laws do not provide sufficient protections for taxpayers in these situations. In addition, I am deeply troubled by the manipulation of public opinion that we have seen in recent years, as well as the corruption that has been exposed at the EU level. These developments are particularly concerning given the potential for the EU to be an innovative, standards-setting institution that works for the benefit of all its citizens. My biggest fear is that people will become increasingly disengaged from the political process and will not exercise control over the actions of their elected representatives.
