Robert Tharp, Meriwether & Tharp LLC – Family Law Lawyer of the Year

Meriwether & Tharp, LLC is a resolution focused divorce law firm that believes in searching for amicable solutions to cases whenever possible and appropriate.

Strategic Vision – Our practice philosophy is “Divorce Hurts, but it doesn’t have to be Nasty”. To achieve that goal, we have developed a system that we refer to as the “M&T Way” to best help clients through difficult times. At its core, the M&T Way is focused on: meeting our clients where they are and educating them on the law, the process, and what the future may hold for them and their children; developing a team learning environment so that our lawyers and paralegals are constantly improving; and maintaining a resolution focused approach to handling cases.

Legal Expertise – We routinely have nearly 50 new cases a month. We help a broad range of clients, including those with small estates and large ones. Some clients simply need help memorializing an agreement they reached with their spouse, while others need help dealing with their large estate which includes numerous businesses and real estate holdings. Although much of divorce work is at the trial court level (when settlement is not possible), Meriwether & Tharp also handles cases before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Georgia. Our lawyers are involved in almost every local bar association. One of them is the current President of the Forsyth County Bar Association, and another is part of the Charles Longstreet Weltner Family Law Inn of Court. In addition, Meriwether & Tharp’s attorneys are routinely speaking at various continuing education classes for paralegals and lawyers and have even made speaking appearances at Judicial Legal Education Seminars for Juvenile and Superior Court Judges.

Team Learning Environment – At Meriwether and Tharp, LLC, our professionals work in a team based environment to help each other learn and to achieve the maximum benefit for our clients. Behind the scenes we do everything we can to improve our skills including: internal seminars, an internal training website, surveys, and our own Georgia Family Law Treatise. Topics this year alone included: our client’s experience, preliminary action plans, sophisticated marital balance sheets, complex income analysis worksheets, and even our internal alimony calculator that helps clients understand various alimony outcomes.

Educating our Clients (and potential clients) – To enhance the quality of service we give our clients, we have invested a substantial amount of time and energy to educate them about the divorce process at no charge to them. This year alone, we have launched the following to achieve this goal.

1. Web Site – We launched a new web site ( and added over a thousand pages of content to help answer very detailed questions about the divorce process. This web site has already won numerous web site awards including: 9 Hermes Creative Awards, 3 Communicator Awards, 4 Omni Awards, 2 Muse Creative Awards, Web Awards, Marcom Awards, and W3 Awards in categories ranging from web content to informational website and design.

2. Guides and Videos – This year we launched a series of Divorce Guides to help individuals better understand the divorce process. We also created a series of informational videos to help explain the divorce process including our video explaining why divorce doesn’t have to be nasty which won multiple Hermes Creative Awards.

3. Radio & Podcast – We have a weekly radio show on 1160 AM called “Atlanta Divorce Team Radio” geared towards helping consumers better understand the family law process. In addition, we appear monthly on the Trust Dale radio show to help educate consumers about various aspects of family law. We also launched a podcast called “Your Source for Divorce Podcast” to provide additional free information to consumers.

Awards & Growth – Although our attorneys are proud of the various awards they have won (including 7 different attorney selections to Super Lawyers, 1 attorney named as a 2016 Georgia Elite attorneys, various Lexis and AVVO Client Choice awards, and winning Kudzu’s “Best of” for the third year in a row), what speaks best as to our results is the continued growth of our firm. In fact our growth has been so strong we were recently named by Law Firm 500 as one of the top one hundred fastest growing law firms in America based upon our exponential revenue growth coupled with sound financial standing, operational excellence and commitment to client service.

Community Service – Meriwether & Tharp believes in giving back to the community. In addition to being a “Diamond Sponsor” of the 34th Annual Georgia Family Law Institute, we are very proud to be the presenting sponsor for the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta radio-thon this year that will be carried on over 6 local radio stations. The hope is to bring in over $250,000 for the organization. In addition, some of our lawyers work outside the office with local churches to save marriages. We have even talked potential clients out of hiring us and into saving their marriages.
