Interview with Dulce Alvarez-Fresco

How do you see the future of commercial law evolving globally?

We're entering an era where ESG compliance, digital contracts, and AI-driven due diligence will reshape the landscape. Lawyers must evolve from gatekeepers to strategic advisors who understand both law and innovation.

How do you stay ahead in such a fast-evolving legal and technological environment?

Continuous learning is non-negotiable. I attend European legal seminars, monitor international jurisprudence, and collaborate with technical experts to understand emerging threats. Whether it's blockchain, AI, or quantum computing, I believe lawyers must be proactive interpreters of innovation.

What initially attracted you to commercial law, and what continues to inspire you in such a dynamic and demanding field?

My journey into commercial law began with a fascination for how legal frameworks shape global business. Early in my career, I was drawn to the complexity of cross-border transactions and the challenge of aligning legal systems across jurisdictions. What continues to inspire me is the intersection of law and innovation—especially in areas like data protection and emerging technologies. Commercial law is no longer just about contracts; it's about navigating digital ethics, global compliance, and the evolving role of law in a connected world.

What unique perspectives or strengths do women bring to leadership roles in commercial law, especially in high-stakes negotiations?

Commercial negotiations, particularly in digitally driven environments, should be conducted through a collaborative and solution-focused approach that fosters mutual trust between parties. Parties in commercial negotiations may be represented by both men and women, as the field increasingly includes and values the contributions excellent legal professionals. It is essential to ensure that legal strategies are not only compliant with applicable regulatory frameworks but also aligned with the commercial objectives of all stakeholders, enabling agreements that are both enforceable and commercially sustainable.

How does your approach differ when handling cross-border matters versus domestic issues, and what lessons have you learned from international exposure?

Cross-border matters demand cultural fluency, strategic diplomacy, and a deep understanding of international protocols. Whether advising on AI-Act comliance, or navigating EU data transfers, I tailor my approach to each jurisdiction's legal and social context. The key lesson is that law is never practiced in a vacuum—it's shaped by history, politics, and people. International exposure has taught me to listen more, assume less, and always seek common ground.

What advice would you give to young lawyers entering commercial law today?

"Master the fundamentals, but don't stop there. Build emotional intelligence, stay curious about global markets, and never underestimate the value of integrity—it's your most enduring asset. I believe mentorship is not a duty—it's a legacy.

What does this award mean to you, and how do you hope it highlights excellence and diversity in the legal profession?

Being named Commercial Lawyer of the Year is deeply meaningful. It's a recognition of the work I've done, but also of the values I stand for—integrity, innovation, and inclusion.

I hope this award sends a message that excellence in law is not confined to traditional paths. It thrives in diverse voices, interdisciplinary thinking, and a commitment to shaping a more ethical and connected legal future.
